A city court will hear the bail application of former Bombay police chief Ramdeo Tyagi on August 20.
Sessions court judge Abhay Thipsay on Friday adjourned a hearing on Tyagi's bail plea as the latter's counsel could not produce the former police chief's medical report. Tyagi is admitted to Bombay Hospital with a heart condition.
Tyagi, who was the joint police commissioner during the 1993 riots in the city, headed the special operations squad of the Bombay Police. He is accused of ordering his men to open fire at Suleiman Bakery, in which nine Muslims were killed.
Tyagi has alleged that the move to arrest him, eight years after the incident, is politically motivated. The firing at the bakery was carried out in self-defence, Tyagi has told the court.
Tyagi filed the bail application after a special task force filed charges against him. The charges have been based on the findings of the Srikrishna Commission, which probed the riots.
According to the commission's report, there was no firing at the police team from the premises of the Suleiman Usman Bakery at Chunabhatti in central Bombay, as none of the victims were armed. It said the people in the bakery were shot dead in cold blood.
Tyagi has denied the charges. According to him, he was present outside the bakery while his men shot their way inside, but the terrorists escaped through a rear door.
