Puja organisers move court against Bombay police

Organisers of a Ganesh marquee in Bombay, allegedly sponsored by a mobster, have taken the city police to court, accusing it of imposing unreasonable curbs on its operations.

The Sahyadhri Krida Mandal, the organisers of the marquee designed on the lines of the Mysore Palace, has had a brush with the police for the second successive year over the area occupied by it in the Tilak Nagar neighbourhood.

Though the marquee measures 50 feet by 50 feet, the organisers have occupied a total area of 150 feet by 90 feet, police and municipal officials said.

Reacting to allegations by the organisers in some local newspapers, the Tilak Nagar police said the Mandal had been asked to restrict its lighting to the area of the marquee as well as regulate the flow of devotees

Police officials, however, said they would wait for the court's decision before acting against the organisers. The marquee is said to have been sponsored by mobster Chhota Rajan.

The organisers have also been prevented from holding sales and exhibitions at the vicinity of the marquee.
