Bombay's former police commissioner Ramdeo Tyagi, main accused in the Suleman Bakery firing case, was on Wednesday remanded to judicial custody till September 12 by the Mazgaon metropolitan court.
Tyagi, who is indisposed at the Bombay Hospital and Research Centre, could not, however, attend the proceedings before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate A A A Kidwai.
The magistrate also directed the police to shift Tyagi to the Arthur Road Jail by 1700 IST on August 31.
Fifteen other policemen involved in the case were present for the hearing, while two constables, whose anticipatory bail application is to be heard, remained absent.
Tyagi, who retired as director general of the elite National Security Guard, was arrested on August 14 by the Special Task Force of the Bombay police appointed by the Maharashtra government to implement the recommendations of the Justice B N Srikrishna Commission, which investigated the 1992-93 riots in the city.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (STF) S Sonawane produced a letter in court written by Dr P L Tiwari, who is attending on Tyagi for his heart ailment. The letter said the former policeman was now under Dr Jhunjhunwala's treatment for back pain.
Charges were filed against Tyagi and the others in the court a couple of days ago.
It was alleged that the Special Operations Squad headed by Tyagi, then joint commissioner of police (crime), fired indiscriminately inside the bakery in south-central Bombay on January 9, 1993, killing nine persons who the police claimed were terrorists.
Earlier, tight security arrangements were made at the Mazgaon court in anticipation of Tyagi's appearance before the magistrate. Police commandos and the Special Reserve Police were called to assist the local police and a special squad of the Byculla police station.
Shashikant Shinde, who appeared for Tyagi, did not oppose the judicial custody demanded by the prosecution, but asked that his client be allowed to remain in hospital for health reasons.
