The exhibition Picasso: Metamorphoses 1900-1972 is the result of a cultural agreement reached between India and France in 1998 during the India visit of French President Jacques Chirac, Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Jagmohan said on Wednesday.
Jointly organised by the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA, Mumbai), ministry of culture and the embassy of France, the exhibition will remain in Delhi till January 31, 2002. It will then travel to Mumbai.
Curated by Marie-Laure Bernadac, Chief Curator of the Museum Picasso in Paris and Saryu Doshi, director of the NGMA, Mumbai, the exhibition comprises 122 of the artist's works, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, drawings, graphics, engravings and collages.
French Ambassador Bernard de Montferrand termed the exhibition 'a first milestone' in Indo-French cultural dialogue.
As part of the bilateral agreement between the two nations, an exhibition of Indian sculptures from the Gupta period will be taken to France in 2003.
