Thackeray slaps Rs 1 billion suit on Outlook

Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray Monday filed a Rs 1 billion suit against Outlook magazine for carrying an article hinting at his links with controversial film financier Bharat Shah.

The suit, filed by his lawyer Satish Maneshinde, will come up for hearing before Justice H L Gokhale on Tuesday.

The impugned article mentions that Shah was possibly arrested because of his proximity to the Thackerays and also because he had financed Hasina Maan Jayegi, a film produced by Smita Thackeray, daughter-in-law of the Sena chief.

The article also alleges that Shah helped the Thackerays in "questionable" financial deals.

Thackeray has contended in the suit that the statements about him were false and calculated to defame him and harm his reputation in the eyes of the public.

The Sena chief argued that the articles revolve around Shah and he did not wish to be drawn into the picture more particularly because the special court is yet to decide on allegations against the film financier.

The statements in the article are without any support and material to connect the Thackerays with any questionable deals of Shah, the Sena chief contended.
