R D Tyagi admitted to ICU

By Our Correspondent in Bombay

Former Bombay police commissioner R D Tyagi, whose application for anticipatory bail was on Wednesday rejected by the Bombay High Court, was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in Bombay Hospital after he complained of chest pain on Thursday afternoon.

Speaking to rediff.com, Dr P L Tiwari who attended to Tyagi said, "On Thursday morning, he had come for a check up complaining of chest pain. Since his ECG was not normal, I told him to get admitted immediately."

Apparently, Tyagi was admitted to a hospital in March 1998 for a similar problem.

Asked whether the news of rejection of his bail plea had depressed Tyagi, Dr Tiwari said, "I cannot say."

Justice A B Palkar had on Wednesday ordered Tyagi to surrender before the police on August 8 if he failed to obtain a stay from the Supreme Court.

Tyagi has been charged with ordering the police firing at Suleman bakery during the 1992-93 communal riots in Bombay, resulting in the death of nine persons. Tyagi was then a joint commissioner of police.

Dr Tiwari said that if Tyagi's condition turned out to be normal in a day or two, he would be discharged.
