Two persons - Pradeep Kumar (47) and Jairaj (38) - had been detained by the police on Tuesday for allegedly hacking into the Bombay police's official web site.
Both of them are marine engineers and were caught after police managed to track down their Internet Protocol (IP) address.
Another suspect, who goes by the pseudonym of Dr Neukar, is absconding. A computer engineer, Dr Neukar was allegedly the brain behind the hacking incident.
The trio are allegedly members of a group called G-13 Hackers Force.
The police came to know that the hackers spent four minutes on the site to send a couple of mails and post abuses on the homepage.
Hackers are liable for punishment of up to three years imprisonment under the provisions of the Information Technology Act if proven guilty.
The Bombay police had set up a Cyber Cell to solve hacking and other computer related crimes. It operated two sites - www.cybercellbombaycity.com and www.ccicbombay.com - displaying the Information Technology Act and other laws pertaining to IT.
On Monday afternoon, hackers broke into these web sites and defaced it with abuse accusing the cops of letting their guard down.
The abuses were meant to show up the cops as inefficient and incapable of detecting and tackling cyber crimes.
Interestingly, the trio had hacked into the Bombay police site from a cyber cafe.
