Communal violence in
parts of Maharashtra

"Tension has been reported from Aurangabad, Nanded and Pune after rumours, based on wrong press reports about the burning of pages of the Koran in New Delhi published in some Hyderabad-based publications, spread, leading to stone-pelting in these areas," Bhujbal, in charge of the Home Ministry, told reporters.

"The law and order situation is fully under control," he asserted.

Bhujbal said Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence was bent on fomenting trouble in the country.

He appealed to the people and the media not to give credence to such rumours.

A report from Pune said tension prevailed in eastern parts of the city after a mob indulged in stone-pelting at Ganeshpeth after a provocative poster was put up in front of a place of worship.

Trouble was sparked off in the locality after some people, returning from a mosque, got agitated on seeing the poster, police said.

The mob indulged in stone-pelting and tension prevailed in parts of the city including Ganeshpeth, Nanapeth and Ganjpeth.

Some people have been arrested in this connection and police have deployed State Reserve Police Force jawans in the affected areas.

However, the situation is under control, the police added.

Meanwhile, a report from Surat said stone-pelting was reported in the sensitive Broach district of south Gujarat following a day-long bandh, called by Muslim organisations to protest against the alleged burning of the Koran in New Delhi, police said.

However, the situation is well under control, police sources said.
