TADA court records statements of
blast accused after 8 years

On the eighth anniversary of the serial explosions that rocked Bombay killing 257 persons and injuring 713, a TADA court in Bombay has commenced recording the statements of the accused towards the end of the trial.

Altogether 126 accused, including film star Sanjay Dutt, will depose before the court by turns to state their point of view on the evidence tendered by the prosecution.

The first accused to depose before designated judge P D Kode on March 9 was Mohammed Shoeib Kasam Ghansar. The court continued to record his statement even on Monday.

More than 300 questions were put to him regarding the conspiracy hatched by Tiger Memon to shatter India's economy by causing the blasts.

The accused denied knowledge of the conspiracy and said he was not aware of a meeting held between Tiger Memon and other accused to seek revenge for demolition of the disputed structure in Ayodhya by causing explosions in Bombay.

Mohammed said he was ignorant of Tiger Memon sending some accused to Pakistan via Dubai for undertaking training in handling of arms and explosives. He was not aware of the movements of Memon family prior to the blasts and thereafter when they returned from Pakistan enroute Dubai, he said.

Mohammed refuted allegations of the prosecution that on March 12, 1993, he had parked a scooter laden with RDX at Shaikh Memon street, which exploded killing 17 persons.

He also denied having filled the vehicle in the garage of Tiger's Al-Husseini building at Mahim in central Bombay with RDX.
