Maharashtra experiences tremors
in quick succession

Just two days after Latur region experienced a tremor, two more districts -- Kolhapur and Sangli -- in south western Maharashtra, experienced an earthquake on Thursday night, creating panic among residents.

Although there were no reports of loss of life or property in both the mild tremors, the shocks stirred nightmarish memories of the 1993 killer quake in Killari in Latur district, official sources said.

The shock, recorded at 21:34 hours on Thursday night in Kolhapur and Sangli, measured 3.9 on the Richter Scale, slightly more in magnitude than the one felt in Latur and adjoining Osmanabad last Tuesday, but enough to send people out on the streets.

The tremors in Latur measured 3 on the Richter Scale, they said.

The epicentre of Thursday night's tremor was near the Chandoli irrigation dam, they said.

The government machinery is fully alert and there is no need for panic as seismic activity is being monitored consistently, they added.
