Ban RSS, says Maharashtra minister

The issue concerning a ban on the Students Islamic Movement of India took a new turn on Friday, with a Maharashtra minister advocating a similar ban on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal.

''The RSS and its outfits must be banned since they also breach communal harmony,'' Minister of State for Home Kripashankar Singh told reporters in Bombay.

A proposal to this effect would be discussed at the co-ordination committee meeting of the ruling Democratic Front coalition, before sending it to the Centre, Singh said after attending a janata darbar at Gandhi Bhavan, the Congress office in south Bombay.

Singh was replying to queries by media persons in view of recent statements by Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, who also holds the Home portfolio, seeking a ban on SIMI.

When asked about contrary views of the Maharashtra government and its Uttar Pradesh counterpart over banning SIMI, Singh said, ''The BJP government there is aware that if it demands a ban on SIMI, similar restrictions on the RSS and its affiliate organisation will be sought for their involvement in the Ayodhya demolition case.''

While the Maharashtra government has sought a ban on SIMI, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Rajnath Singh recently stated that he did not feel any need to ban the organisation.
