BEST buses off Bombay roads, employees demand diwali ex-gratia

Commuters in Bombay were once again forced to make alternate arrangements as the BEST employees went on a strike on the issue of ex-gratia before the diwali festival.

However, this time, commuters were not taken by surprise as newspapers carried reports about the imminent strike by the transport workers.

Leaders of the employees union have said that the strike would last for 48 hours.

Autorickshaw drivers in the suburbs are acting pricey and many have hiked their rates.

Many city dwellers have decided to use their personal vehicles to commute to work.

The police control room has not received reports of any untoward incident in the metropolis so far.

PTI adds:
The BEST management has requested the state road transport corporation (MSRTC) to run its services on trunk routes in the metropolis, a BEST spokesman said.

The state government has issued a notification under the Motor Vehicles Act seeking all vehicle owners, including private cars, to pick up passengers.

It also warned strict action against striking employees and stated that organisers would have to pay compensation for damages that might occur during the course of the agitation.
