Navy decides to open INS Vikrant to the public

Notwithstanding efforts by the Maharashtra government to convert India's first aircraft carrier, the now decommissioned INS Vikrant, into a maritime museum, the Indian Navy on Friday announced its decision to throw open the ship to the public during the first week of December, coinciding with Navy Week.

The historical warship has been spruced up with a variety of aircraft, weapons, naval artefacts and mannequins and will be open to public from December one to nine except for December two, Vice Admiral Vinod Pasricha, the flag officer commanding-in-chief, Western Naval Command told reporters on board the decommissioned vessel on Friday.

Pasricha said the state government was keen to convert the ship into a maritime museum but the process of floating global tenders and making arrangements for its grouting at Oyster Rock off the Bombay coast would take at least another year.

"We intend to open the ship to the common man and make it an interesting and educational experience for them," Pasricha said.

However, owing to security reasons, the public can visit the decommissioned aircraft carrier only during the Navy Week.
