Maharashtra advocates introducing Eng from class I

The Maharashtra Minister for Education, Professor Ramkrishna More, on Monday advocated his government's decision to introduce English from Std I in the state.

Prof More, who was speaking at a meeting of non-Bharatiya Janata Party chief ministers in New Delhi, said English had become more relevant with the growth of information technology.

He said that Maharashtra had reduced the gap between the urban and rural literacy rate from 30 to 15 per cent in the last 20 years.

The state was also committed to reduce the English and computer literacy gap between the urban and rural areas, he added.
