Second-generation LCA to be test
flown by April 20

The second-generation prototype of the Light Combat Aircraft would be test flown by April 20, LCA programme director Kota Harinarayana said on Friday.

The model aircraft would be packed with advanced technological features, light weight communication equipment and improved safety conditions, he said while delivering a lecture on the Development of LCA/MCA and Associated Technology at the two-day 16th National Convention of Aerospace Engineers in Hyderabad.

The production of LCA would commence in 2006 and it would take another three years for inducting the jet into the Indian Air Force, Harinarayana said, adding that the programme would need an additional Rs 20 billion for completion.

The LCA could be an ideal and immediate replacement for the ageing MIG aircraft, but the new jet would need 200 test flights, he said.

While the LCA had made considerable progress, the Medium (range) Combat Aircraft was still in the conceptual stage with scientists working out the details, he said.
