Mumbai Police Commissioner M N Singh, who has gone on a week's leave in the midst of controversy over release of suspected Al Qaeda terrorist Mohammed Afroz on bail, has apparently earned the wrath of higher-ups in the Maharashtra home ministry, official sources said on Tuesday.
Proceeding on leave, a day after Afroz was granted bail by the court, Singh's move has raised eyebrows in government, legal and social circles.
This is for the first time that the police chief has gone on leave for a week since he took over as commissioner of police two years ago.
Singh faced embarrassment in Afroz case because he had headed police teams, which visited abroad to 'collect evidence'.
Although he said that they had collected enough material against Afroz and others, no such evidence has surfaced in the charge sheet filed by the police.
It is also not clear why the police were delaying filing the charge sheet.
