The murder of a Bajrang Dal activist sparked off riots in Kalyan in Thane district on Tuesday night with a mob setting fire to houses and commercial establishments of various communities, the police said.
The police also fired at the mob indulging in stabbing, stone pelting and setting fire to houses and shops.
Trouble started in the Rohidaswada area after the body of Bajrang Dal activist, who was stabbed to death, was found.
The Thane Police Commissioner, S M Shangari, and Joint Police Commissioner Ambalal Varma have rushed to the spot, the police said.
