Karnik, a sitting member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), was arrested at around 1400 hours IST after he was summoned to the ACB's Worli office, on charge of conspiracy, the official told PTI on Sunday.
According to ACB officials, the MPSC had conducted a written examination in 1999 for posts of sub-inspectors, sales tax inspectors and assistants for posts in the state government, in which as many as 398 answer sheets of candidates were replaced on payment of money.
"Intensive interrogation and careful scrutiny of papers showed that Karnik was involved in the conspiracy. Therefore, we decided to take action against him," the official said, adding that the UPSC chairman would be intimated about the arrest.
"There is no need to seek permission from the UPSC to effect Karnik's arrest," he added.
The private secretary Avinash Sanas had been arrested on Saturday night.
Both Karnik and Sanas were later produced before a holiday magistrate at around 1630 hours, the ACB official said.
The court has ordered both of them to be kept in the ACB's custody till July 20, he added.
Six others including DCP Baban Kadam and a woman conduit Manisha Pravin Nichet have also been arrested.
