3 killed in clash in Jalgaon district

Three persons, including a five-month-old boy, were killed and 50 shops, houses and vehicles set on fire on Tuesday in violence between two groups at Jamner town in Jalgaon district of Maharashtra.

The violence was sparked off, at about 1530 hours IST, when the groups clashed over the arrest of a person allegedly involved in desecration of a Hanuman idol in the town's market place on June 15, the sources said.

The mobs indulged in stone-pelting and set fire to 50 houses, vehicles and shops, they said.

While the boy and Ramesh Mali (45) were stabbed to death, Yusuf, a resident of Ahmedabad, was killed when police opened fire to disperse the mobs, police sources said.

Curfew has been imposed in the town, they said.

The sources said 10 people, including an additional superintendent of police and a police inspector, were injured in the heavy stone-pelting.

State Reserve Police (SRP) personnel and senior officers have rushed to the spot.
