Onkar Singh in New Delhi
The last rites of Natasha Singh, daughter-in-law of former external affairs minister Natwar Singh, were performed amid chanting of Vedic mantras at the Lodhi Road crematorium in New Delhi on Tuesday.
Natasha's parents and brothers were present when her estranged husband Jagat Singh lit the funeral pyre.
The Delhi police had handed over the body to Natwar Singh's family on Tuesday after conducting two post-mortems to ascertain the cause of her death.
The socialite's body was found on the first floor terrace of the Hyatt Regency hotel on Sunday morning.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi visited Natwar Singh's residence in Vasant Vihar to offer condolences.
Among those who were present at the crematorium included former governor of Uttar Pradesh Romesh Bhandari, Congress leaders R K Dhawan, Motilal Vohra, Mahavir Prasad Singh, Maninderjit Singh Bitta, Anand Sharma, Major Ved Prakash and Shiela Dikshit.
Former Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Gurcharan Singh Tohra was the only Akali Dal leader present at the crematorium.
First Indian Police Service lady officer Kiran Bedi, noted socialite Bina Ramani and her daughter Malini Ramani and several others from the fashion fraternity were also there to pay their last respects to the departed soul.
Kiran Bedi said that the media should not draw any conclusion about the investigation on the basis of the post-mortem reports.
"Post-mortem is only one part of the investigations. I feel that the media should exercise restraint and allow the police to carry on with the investigations. It is too premature to reach any conclusion," she told rediff.com
About Natasha's association with her organisation Navjoyti, Kiran Bedi it was totally professional.
"I did not know her personally. She had approached us to do pictures of children in Tihar (Jail). We facilitated her in her effort and put her in touch with the Tihar jail authorities. I think she had put in a lot of hard work... She wanted to hold an exhibition of the photographs taken by her. It is up to the family to decide what to do with them," she said.
