10 dead in Guwahati landslides

At least 10 people died in land and mudslides in Assam's capital Guwahati on Wednesday night following heavy rains in the city and its outskirts, Kamrup (Metropolitan) District Magistrate A K Absar Hazarika said.

Hazarika said a heavy downpour triggered several landslides along the small hillocks that ring the city. At least four persons died in a landslide in the city's Kamakhya area, where the famed shrine of Kamakhya Devi is located.

Several kutcha houses have been buried under mudslides brought about by the incessant rains in Santipur, Fatasil Ambari and Pub Sarania localities.

The Brahmaputra and its tributary, the Bharalu river, has inundated several low-lying areas in the city after overnight floods. The Brahmaputra, which was flowing more than 1.5 metres above the danger mark for the last four days, is threatening to breach the embankment that protects some of the low-lying areas in Guwahati.

Several localities like Zoo Road, Silpukhuri, Chandmari, Fatasil Ambari, Fancy Bazar are under knee-deep water.

The second day of the weekly Guwahati tea auction has been called off since many of the buyers, brokers and sellers have not been able to make it to the auction centre.

The flood situation in other parts of the state is equally bad.
