"India would welcome the visit of President Pervez Musharraf,"  Navtej Sarna, official spokesman of the ministry of external affairs told newsmen in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Earlier, Dr Sajay Baru, media advisor to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, told newsmen that the government would welcome a visit by President Musharraf but clarified that the visit would not be a state visit.

He also said that prime minister has asked the external affairs ministry to make the necessary arrangements for the visit.

President Musharraf had expressed his desire to visit India to see a match.

General Zia-ul-Haq was the last ruler of Pakistan to have visited India to see a cricket match. Zia visited India in the eighties.

While the BCCI has expressed its desire to host Musharraf for the Kolkata test, it is not yet known whether he will come to see a Test match.
