Underworld gangster Abu Salem, who was extradited from Portugal last week, is no more interested in flashy or designer clothes, CBI sources said on Tuesday.

Salem, who is fond of faded jeans and short shirts, had worn a blue faded jeans and an off-white short shirt when he was brought to Mumbai on early Friday.

He preferred to wear the same clothes when he was taken to St George Hospital in South Mumbai for a routine medical check up on Monday afternoon.

Asked why Salem was wearing the same clothes for three days, CBI sources said it was the gangster's own choice to continue with the old pair although he has dozens of flashy and designer clothes.

Sources said Salem was being allowed to take bath once a day but CBI interrogators found it inappropriate to ask him to change clothes.

"How can we ask him to change if he continues to wear the same clothes," CBI sources asked.

However, according to CBI sources, Salem voluntarily decided to drop the old pair on Tuesday and go in for a brand new pair of jeans and T-shirt," they added.

According to the sources, Salem, while returning to India from Portugal, brought four suitcases while his girlfriend Monica Bedi brought five suitcases that contained their clothes and personal belongings.

It also had a small television besides some documents and his diaries which the CBI seized, sources said.
