A day after extradited gangster Abu Salem alleged that the Anti Terrorist Squad of Mumbai police subjected him to torture in custody, the ATS which is probing the Pradip Jain  murder case, has decided to make him undergo scientific tests.

"We will subject Salem to scientific tests and whatever tests are necessary for the probe," ATS DIG Jaijit Singh told PTI in Mumbai on Saturday.

Stage not set for Salem becoming approver

The ATS may subject Salem to polygraph and brain mapping tests, and if he relents, may also ask him to undergo the serum test, sources said adding that the ATS authorities were getting in touch with the Ahmedabad and Bangalore forensic science laboratories to get appointments for the tests.

ATS sources said they have very limited time at their disposal to interrogate Salem in connection with the Jain murder case and it was therefore necessary to subject him to scientific tests to gather evidences and clues in the case.

Mumbai police sources said with Salem's lawyers alleging the gangster was tortured, it was not possible for the ATS to subject him to intense interrogation and that the scientific tests were easier and reliable methods of gathering discreet information.

If Salem undergoes the scientific tests, he will be the first underworld figure to do so.

Although several underworld figures like Dawood Ibrahim's younger brother Iqbal Kaskar, Ejaz Pathan, Tariq Parveen and Mustafa Dosa, who are booked under stringent MCOCA, were extradited, none have been made to undergo these tests.
