Abu Salem brought to Delhi

Extradited gangster Abu Salem was on Monday brought to Delhi for production in a court here in connection with extortion cases.

A team of the Anti-Terrorist Squad of Mumbai Police arrived with Salem in New Delhi on the Golden Temple Express at 7.20 pm.

The gangster, an accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, was brought in a second class compartment of the train.

Wearing a maroon shirt and blue jeans, Salem was quickly whisked away by a team of Delhi Police to a police van that took him to Tihar Jail.

Earlier, Salem was to be taken to Tihar from Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, but the police officials made last minute changes keeping in view the large media presence at the station and the gangster disembarked at the New Delhi Railway Station.

There were some media persons present at the New Delhi Railway Station, but they did not get a chance to talk to Salem.

The gangster has been brought to Delhi to be produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Seema Maini at the Tis Hazari courts here tomorrow in connection with extortion cases pending against him.

After producing him in the court, Delhi Police is likely to ask for his custody for the purpose of interrogation. Salem, after his extradition from Portugal in 2005, had been lodged at Arthur Road Jail, Mumbai.

The trial against him in the Mumbai serial blasts is yet to begin.
