A government school teacher, who was arrested in connection with a TV sting in an alleged sex racket, was granted bail on Monday by a local court even as the Delhi High Court asked the prosecution searching questions about evidence gathered against her.
A Delhi court gave relief to Uma Khurana, who a TV channel had alleged had pushed her students into prostitution in a purported expose, on furnishing a personal bond of Rs 5,000. Khurana was arrested on August 31 under the Immoral Trafficking Act, a day after the expose was aired by 'Live India'.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Alok Agrawal while ordering her release also issued a warrant to police to produce Prakash Singh, the reporter of the channel 'Live
India' involved in the sting.
The high court, which had taken suo motu cognisance of media reports that the sting operation was fake and distorted last Friday, asked the police to furnish details of evidence collected against Khurana in connection with the expose. It had already issued notices to the city government and police.
A bench comprising Chief Justice M K Sharma and Justice Sanjeev Khanna said, "We would like to see the case diary on Wednesday to look into the evidence collected against her."
The Delhi police submitted that the investigation into the case was still going on.
Meanwhile, Delhi police counsel Mukta Gupta submitted that it cannot be said that Khurana altogether innocent.
The evidence showed her involvement in certain part of the sting operation, she said.
The court, apparently, not satisfied with their contention, asked them to show whether there was any substantial evidence against her.
