England paceman Stuart Broad has pipped former skipper Kevin Pietersen to become country's most valuable player for the 2008-09 season.

Broad bagged 64 wickets and scored 464 runs to secure 388 most valuable player points, eight ahead of Pietersen according to Professional Cricketers' Association statistics.

Broad started the year with one-day International bowling figures of 5-23 against South Africa at Trent Bridge in May and followed it up with career-best Test figures of 5-85 against the West Indies in Jamaica.

In the ODIs he took 32 wickets at under five runs per over and showed consistency in the Test series against South Africa and the West Indies.

Broad, who came first in the ODI most valuable player category, third in the Twenty20 version and fourth in the Test match category, played 35 matches and was the second most capped player this year behind Pietersen.
