'This is the best possible Indian team,' says Srikkanth

August 16, 2009 20:34 IST

Chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth believes he and his colleagues have picked the strongest Indian squad, which is capable of winning the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa.

"This is the best possible Indian team and we are confident that they would go on to win the Champions Trophy in South Africa," Srikkanth said after the selection committee meeting at the MC Chidambaram Stadium.

Even though India would be without pace spearhead Zaheer Khan and star opener Virender Sehwag, both recuperating from shoulder surgery, in both the 8-14 tri-series in Sri Lanka and the September 22-October 5 Champions Trophy in South Africa, Srikkanth felt there was enough balance in the side.

"We are happy with the squad. It's very balanced team and we wish them all the best for Champions Trophy.

"We want the Indian fans to pray for them so that they win the Champions Trophy," said Srikkanth in his brief interaction with the mediamen who had mobbed him as he came out of the meeting.

The selectors today named a 15-member squad, which marked the return of former India captain Rahul Dravid, who came back to the ODI side after a two-year gap.

Leg-spinner Amit Mishra also returned to the ODI fold after six long years.

Veteran Sachin Tendulkar also returns to the side after skipping the ODI series in the West Indies.
