Uncapped Denly in England ODI squad

August 17, 2009 20:22 IST

England called up uncapped Kent opening batsman Joe Denly in their one-day squad for the seven-match 50 overs series against Australia and the Champions Trophy in South Africa.

Denly has also been included in the squad for two Twenty20 internationals against Australia following the fifth and final Ashes Test at the Oval starting on Thursday.

Andrew Flintoff, who will retire from test cricket after the Oval Test to concentrate on the one-day game, has been included in both squads but fast bowler Steve Harmison misses out.

Andrew Strauss will captain the 50 overs side with Paul Collingwood leading the Twenty20 team. Collingwood captained England in their unsuccessful Twenty20 World Cup campaign this year.

"We have kept faith with the bulk of the squad which was successful in the series against West Indies earlier this summer and also included two players, Luke Wright and Adil Rashid, who were part of our squad for the World T20," national selector Geoff Miller said in a statement.

"Joe Denly has impressed the selectors for a while with some excellent performances in one-day cricket and, with Kevin Pietersen unavailable through injury this is an excellent opportunity for Joe to step up to the next level and show what he is capable of."

Squad: Andrew Strauss (captain), James Anderson, Ravi Bopara, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Paul Collingwood, Joe Denly, Andrew Flintoff, Eoin Morgan, Matt Prior, Adil Rashid, Owais Shah, Ryan Sidebottom, Graeme Swann, Luke Wright
