Asif, Kaneria rip through New Zealand

Pakistan took firm control of the second Test on Friday after ripping through New Zealand's batting line-up and dismissing them for 99.

When play ended on Day 2 at the Basin Reserve, in Wellington, the visitors were 229 runs ahead.

Pacer Mohammad Asif (4 for 40) and leg-spinner Danish Kaneria (3 for 6) did the bulk of damage as the hosts were all out in 36.5 overs.

Pakistan had earlier resumed on their overnight score of 161-6. Thanks to a 64-run eighth-wicket stand between Kamran Akmal (70) and Umar Gul they finished with a healthy 264 all out.

New Zealand's reply started disastrously as they lost their first wicket in the very opening over when Martin Guptill was rapped on the pads by a Mohammad Aamer inswinger.

This opened the floodgates and Asif started his spell by picking Tim McIntosh for four, leaving the Kiwis gasping on 5 for 2.

Ross Taylor and Daniel Flynn provided a little stability in a 43-run partnership before Umar Gul sent Taylor's stumps flying.

Soon after, Gul accounted for his second victim in Peter Fulton (0).

Pakistan bowled with a lot of zeal and though Flynn tried to play an innings of a saviour he failed in his attempt, perishing for 29.

A complete collapse ensued and the Kiwis lost their last five wickets for 14 runs.

Pakistan openers Imran Farhat and Salman Butt made a solid start to their second innings, playing each ball on merit, till pacer Iain O'Brien came to the party and dismissed both.

Butt went for 18, caught by Taylor, and then Farhat followed for 35 when Fulton caught him at second slip.

O'Brien was the pick of New Zealand's bowlers, returning with figures of 2-16.

At stumps, Mohammad Yousuf and Misbah-ul Haq were unbeaten on 10 and 1 respectively.
