Sreesanth likely to become Kerala captain

July 15, 2009 23:41 IST

India speedster S Sreesanth, who was left out of the national team for the Champions Trophy to be held in South Africa, is likely to be appointed captain of the Kerala Ranji Trophy team for the coming season.

Even though selection of the team as well as the captain rests entirely with the state selection committee, Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) has expressed desire that Sreesanth may be given the chance to lead the state, KCA sources told PTI.

The coaching camp for the Ranji Trophy team will begin on Thursday and would be held at Kothamangalam, in Ernakulam district, where the first Regional Cricket Coaching Academy was inaugurated recently.

After the two-week long coaching camp, the captain for the coming Ranji season will be announced. About 36 players, including some under-19 players, have been chosen for the camp.

The under-19 players have been included with a view to giving them exposure.

KCA has embarked on a project, 'Mission 2020' envisaging the state moving up from Plate to Elite group and ultimately winning the Ranji Trophy, sources said.
