Australia face Lanka in do-or-die battle

For the all-conquering Australians, who dominated the sport for so long, the Twenty20 format still continues to linger as a mystery.

They have been ruled both the ODIs and Test matches for quite a few years now but when it comes to Twenty20 it seems they still have a lot to learn about the latest format of the game.

In the augural edition in 2007, they were beaten by eventual champions India and in this year's ICC World Twenty20 they face a possible elimination after losing their opening game against the West Indies.

Twenty20 specialist David Hussey believes Australia have been in similar scenarios before and have come up trumps.

"It was a disappointing result (against West Indies) but we have to move on.

We have to win against Sri Lanka and win well to stay in the tournament.

We have our backs against the wall but Australians love being in that situation," Hussey said in Nottingham on Sunday, on the eve of their do-or-die clash against Sri Lanka.

Hussey said not having won the tournament last year is acting as the main motivation for the team to bounce back against Sri Lanka to ensure their progress to the Super Eights.

"All the boys are fully focussed on winning this tournament because this is one tournament we haven't won," he said.

Heavy rain since last night meant that Australia like the other teams based in Nottingham had to cancel their net sessions. While Sri Lanka and Ireland practiced indoors, Bangladeshi and Australian players had to spend the gloomy days in the confines of their hotel rooms.

Hussey said the team is drawing inspiration from their World Cup victory in 1999 when they won the title after being on the brink of elimination at one stage.

"We saw a couple of great performances then [1999], and that is what these guys are capable of. We have a few match winners who can come through tomorrow and perform throughout the tournament," the right-hander said.

Australia's task is cut out as they not only have to win but also ensure that they do it with a good margin.

"The run rate is very important and we know what we have to do tomorrow afternoon to Sri Lanka. We have to come out all guns blazing, win the game, and win very well. Twenty20 is very exciting and you might see an Australian team coming out and playing very good cricket."

The Australian also paid rich tribute to Chris Gayle, who smashed 88 from 50 deliveries, to lead West Indies to a seven-wicket victory over Australia.

"He is very intimidating. He is a great player, probably one of the world's best Twenty20 players. Unfortunately we hit Chris Gayle in super top form. And when he is in that sort of form he is a world class batsman and as good as anybody," said Hussey.
