Chawla shines in Sussex's 10-wkt win

June 15, 2009 21:09 IST

Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla bagged a six-wicket haul after a fine show with the bat to ensure a 10-wicket victory for Sussex over Worcestershire in the County Championship Division One first class match in Worcester.

In his debut match for the side, Chawla followed up his maiden century with a six for 152 haul in Worcestershire's second innings on the final day to bundle out the home side for 392 on an unresponsive pitch and give Sussex their first win of the season.

Sussex posted a mammoth 620 for nine in their first innings and shot out Worcestershire for 288 to take a 332-run lead.

Chawla, who signed this week as a temporary replacement for Pakistan's Yasir Arafat, will play only one more championship match, against Somerset at Hove, before his short-term contract as overseas player expires.

After Chawla had done the damage, Sussex had plenty of time to seal victory, although they needed just ten overs in the end to score 61 for no loss.

Chawla returned with eight wickets from the match apart from his brilliant hundred.
