October 23, 2009 21:08 IST

The condition of Bengal all-rounder Avik Chowdhury is stable after he underwent a seven-and-a-half-hour surgery on the vertebral region on Friday.

Chowdhury was in critical condition after being injured in a car accident earlier this week.

"Chowdhury underwent a long, difficult and successful surgery to stabilise the dorsal spine. He is now stable and is in the Intensive Care Unit," a medical bulletin released by the hospital stated.

The cricketer, who was admitted to a private nursing home after the accident on October 18, was on Thursday shifted to another hospital for the marathon surgery.

Earlier, an MRI scan and other examinations were carried out immediately after his admission to the hospital to assess the damage to the cricketer's spinal cord.

Chowdhury will now have to undergo a rehabilitation programme and it was also learnt that the cricketer would be sent to either Australia or Germany for a special treatment to help enable him to walk.

Chowdhury's car went out of control and rammed into a divider between Kalikapur and Ruby Hospital on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass on October 18.
