Terming the racial attacks on Indian students in Australia as 'generic', former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist has said that the country was safe for students.
"We don't believe that it (attack on Indian students) is Indian specific target issue. It's a generic issue," said Gilchrist.
"Notwithstanding the reports, students considering to study in the country should continue to do so," he added.
Admitting that the attacks on students were cause for concern, Gilchrist said it was responsibility of the universities to ensure safety of the students.
"It's a serious issue. But what is important is students' safety. Some of these incidents are a concern. Its a part of the universities' responsibility to ensure the students' safety," he said.
Gilchrist, however, refused to consider Australia as an unsafe destination.
"I wouldn't single out Australia as a more dangerous place. There are similar places everywhere in the world," he added.
