Lalit Modi's wings to be clipped?

Miffed by Lalit Modi's style of functioning that has spawned a lot of controversies, a move is afoot in the BCCI to clip his wings as the Indian Premier League commissioner.

Modi, who wields considerable influence in the powerful post of IPL Commissioner and Chairman, has found himself in a spot of bother after his public disclosure of the stake-holding structure in the Kochi franchisee which has snowballed into a major controversy.

Although no BCCI official was willing to go on record, a top source said that there has been a lot of resentment on Modi's style of functioning and the top brass was contemplating to clip his wings.

"There is some resentment in the manner in which he has brought about this controversy. He has also not consulted the Governing Council on several occasions and made public several important decisions on his Twitter page. This has not gone down well," the source said.

Although as per the IPL constitution, Modi cannot be removed as the commissioner till 2012, he may be asked to discuss all issues with the IPL Governing Council before making anything public.

The IPL Governing Council, which is expected to meet immediately after the third edition of the Twenty20 event, will make it clear to Modi that his role would be restricted, the source said.

The Governing Council would discuss in detail the issue about Kochi franchisee's stakeholders and take a decision on the matter.

BCCI President Shashank Manohar has only few days back written a strongly-worded letter to Modi, saying that his disclosure on Twitter was unbecoming of him as a chairman of the a sub-committee of the board.

"Your action is in serious breach of the confidentiality clause in the agreement," Manohar had written.

"Till date, you have made public statements about a lot of issues which were not even discussed in the meetings of the governing council when it is the governing council which has the authority to take decisions with regard to each and every issue related to IPL," Manohar said.

Wiser from the controversy, the BCCI is also planning to make the entire functioning of the IPL more transparent and make public all the details of the franchisees.
