The spectators, who were detained for jeering Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh at the oval stadium, have been released after being handed a warning by the police.

The three fans, who called the out-of-favour Yuvraj a "water boy" were detained and released after a few hours by the police, the officials said but declined to comment on whether any further action was being contemplated against them.

The three youngsters were detained by the police for taunting the Indian cricketer when he was carrying drinks during the break after the tea session.

An agitated Yuvraj gestured back and pointed one of his fingers even as the organisers tried to calm him down.

The incident was repeated in the evening when Yuvraj, while returning from a practice session, was shouted at and again called a "water boy".

A composed Yuvraj ignored the jeers this time and even obliged some autograph-seeking fans.

Yuvraj subsequently complained to the Indian team management about the incident and manager Ranjib Biswal took up the issue with the local authorities.

"The police was asked to intervene and the situation was brought under control. Yuvraj was not at fault, he did not try to provoke the crowd at all," Biswal said.

When contacted Tony Perera, the CEO of the Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club at the Sara stadium where the Test match is being played, said that the matter had been sorted out.

"The issue is closed. We have additional security in those areas. We had meetings with the Indian cricket officials and the ICC's Anti Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) chief in this regard," Perera said.

"We asked the spectators to just enjoy the match and cooperate in preventing any such incidents," he said.
