The spin ace's 78 is the highest by a Sri Lankan batsman at number 10.
He obliterated Nuwan Kulasekara's [ Images ] 64 against England [ Images ] at Lord's in 2006.
Mendis's innings is also the highest by a number 10 batsman against India, putting into shade West Indian Andy Roberts's 68 at Kolkata [ Images ] in 1983-84.
In all Test cricket, it is the eighth highest score by a number 10 batsman.
