Set a modest target of 126, the visitors achieved the target for the loss of eight wickets.
Twenty-three-year old Jennifer Gunn top-scored for the tourists with 34 off 24 balls.
She featured in a crucial 40-run stand with Daniel Hazell (14 in 16 balls) to take England closer.
Medium pacer Soniya Dabir picked up three wickets for the hosts.
Earlier, put in to bat, India [ Images ] made 125 for five, with the in-form Mithali Raj [ Images ] emerging the top run-getter with 30 off 26 balls with four fours.
The second tie is slated on March 6 and the third and final T20 clash is scheduled on March 8.
India won the five-match 50-over series 3-2 prior to the T20 rubber.
