England women beat India by two wickets

England [ Images ] women got the better of their Indian counterparts by two wickets off the last ball in the first T20 International at the MCA's Bandra-Kurla Complex ground in Mumbai [ Images ] on Thursday.

Set a modest target of 126, the visitors achieved the target for the loss of eight wickets.

Twenty-three-year old Jennifer Gunn top-scored for the tourists with 34 off 24 balls.

She featured in a crucial 40-run stand with Daniel Hazell (14 in 16 balls) to take England closer.

Medium pacer Soniya Dabir picked up three wickets for the hosts.

Earlier, put in to bat, India [ Images ] made 125 for five, with the in-form Mithali Raj [ Images ] emerging the top run-getter with 30 off 26 balls with four fours.

The second tie is slated on March 6 and the third and final T20 clash is scheduled on March 8.

India won the five-match 50-over series 3-2 prior to the T20 rubber.

Brief scores: India 125 for 5 (Mithali Raj 30) lost to England 126 for 8 (Jennifer Gunn 34; Soniya Dabir 3 for 23).
