Irfan Pathan opened the batting and smashed a 32-ball 39 to give the Kings XI Punjab a promising start. Pathan played a good hand in the last match as well and who sort off started from where he left off.

The left-hander hit Manpreet Gony for back to back boundaries in the second over and gave the same treatment to Albie Morkel. But Morkel struck the first blow for Chennai, when he got Bopara caught at the thirdman boundary for 1, in the third over.

Pathan continued the assault on Gony who he hit for another couple of boundaries.

Punjab failed to get going in the first few overs as they reached 41 for one after seven overs.
sangakkara, who came in at the fall of Bopara, hit spinner R Ashwin for a huge hit straight over the bolwer's head for a boundary. Pathan then followed it up with a huge six.

It was Muralitharan, who gave Chennai their second wicket when he had Punjab captain Sangakkara stumped for 15 as Punjab were reduced to 55 for two after nine overs.

Muralitharan then dismissed another compatriot to put Punjab in further strife. Bowling from round the wicket, Muralitharan trapped Mahela Jayawardene leg before wicket for 3 as the visitors were reduced to 64 for four after 11 overs.

Pathan tried to accelerate the run rate as he looked to heave L Balaji through the leg side. But he could only manage to drag it back on to his stumps to be bowled for a brisk 39 from 32 balls as Punjab were reeling at 59 for three after ten overs.

Yuvraj Singh looked to hit his team out of trouble as he pulled Morkel for a boundary and then followed it up with a huge straight six against Ashwin in the next over.

Yuvraj went after Suresh Raina as he lifted one over the covers for a boundary to race to 35 from 21 balls, in the 16th over.

Manvinder Bisla, playing at number seven, failed to get going before he was run out for 7.

With runs not flowing in the final overs, Yuvraj tried a huge shot down the ground against Morkel but holed out to the long-on fielder after a quickfire 43 from 28 as Punjab were reduced to 143 for seven in 19 overs.

Parthiv Patel played a splendid innings of 57 from 58 balls to give the Super Kings a postive start. His innings was laced with four boundaries and two sixes.

Just after completing his half-century, Patel was stumped off Piyush Chawla after which Chennai lost their way.

Matthew Hayden was the first wicket to fall after a quick 33 from 24 balls before he was beaten in the flight as he advanced down the wicket and was bowled by Ramesh Powar. Raina was run out by the bowler Juan Theron for 15 as he kicked the balls on to the stumps as the batsmen attempted a quick single.

Debutant Jaun Theron was the standout player for Punjab XI as he affected a run-out and picked 2 for 17 from his alloted 4 overs to stall Super Kings' chase.

He also had the wickets of Hayden and then had Raina caught out in the Super Over.

Captain Suresh Raina was run out for 15 by Theron on his follow through and the pacer then trapped Murali Vijay leg before wicket for a duck. S Badrinath also didn't last long when he was caught behind off Yuvraj Singh for two as Punjab staged a late comeback.

R Ashwin was dismissed off the final delivery as Chennai Super Kings match against Kings XI Punjab ended in a tie forcing the contest into a Super Over, the first of this IPL season.

Chasing 137 for victory, Chennai finished on 136 for seven in 20 overs with Ashwin hitting a full delivery Irfan Pathan straight to Mohammad Kaif at mid-off.

Kings XI Punjab finally won their first match this IPL season as they edged Chennai Super Kings in the Super Over after the match ended in a tie.

In the Super Over, Chennai, batting first made nine for two before they lost two wickets to Theron. Hayden was bowled for a duck and Raina hit a six before he was out off a top edge as Chennai lost both their wickets, scoring just nine in the over.

In the Super Over, chasing 10 for victory, Yuvraj Singh reverse swept Muttiah Muralitharan for a boundary to win the match for his team after Mahela Jayawardene had hit the first ball for a six.
