- Scorecard

Statistical highlights of the first match in the T20 World Cup, between Sri Lanka and New Zealand, in Guyana on Friday.

- Daniel Vettori was captaining New Zealand for the 20th time in a Twenty20 international. He equalled South Africa's Graeme Smith's record of most appearances as a captain in this format of the game.

- Mahela Jayawardene (81) registered his highest score in T20 internationals, surpassing the 78 he scored against Ireland at Lord's on 14-06-2009.

- Jayawardene also became the leading run-scorer in World Cup matches, surpassing fellow-teammate Tillakaratne Dilshan's tally of 385 runs.

- Jayawardene also completed 500 runs in T20 internationals during his innings. He thus became fourth Sri Lankan after Tillakaratne Dilshan, Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara, and tenth player in T20Is, to do this.

- Jayawardene's innings was also the highest by a Sri Lankan batsman against New Zealand, obliterating Kumar Sangakkara's 69 at Colombo RPS on 04-09-2009.

- Jayawardene also became the highest run-scorer in matches between Sri Lanka and New Zealand. At the end of this match, Jayawardene's run-tally stands at 212 from 7 games, which takes him past Ross Taylor's aggregate of 180 runs from as many games.

- Brendon McCullum registered his first duck in Twenty20 internationals.

- Nathan McCullum, by holding three catches in Sri Lankan innings, equalled the existing record of most catches by a fielder in Twenty20 internationals. McCullum became second New Zealand player- after Ross Taylor – to take three catches in a match. Taylor, incidentally, is the only fielder to have done this twice.

-New Zealand's victory margin of two wickets is the narrowest ever in the history of World Cup Twenty20. There had been two occasions of four wicket wins: Pakistan beat Bangladesh at Cape Town on 20-09-2007 and Netherlands beat England at Lord's on 05-06-2009.

- New Zealand won the match off the penultimate ball of the match- second such instance in T20 World Cup. Zimbabwe had beaten Australia at Cape Town on 12-09-2007 with one ball to spare. There has been one occasion of a chasing side winning off the last ball of the match. This happened at Lord's on 05-06-2009 when Netherlands successfully chased down victory target of 163 against hosts England.

- Nathan McCullum won his maiden man of the match award.
