A senior official from the Enforcement Directorate on Thursday confirmed that they have written a letter to the regional passport office to cancel the travel document of the former IPL chairman Lalit Modi.
The request was sent to the passport office on Wednesday by the Enforcement Directorate, which has already issued a 'Blue Alert' on Lalit Modi, which allows his arrest at any Indian airport should he return to India.
Modi is currently in England and it is suspected that he may flee from there to an unknown destination to avoid arrest.
The regional passport office in Mumbai is currently evaluating the pros and cons of the request from ED and after consulting legal experts it will take necessary action in next couple of days.
The ED has accused Modi of not cooperating with the investigations following charges levelled against him for siphoning off money while he was running the Indian Premier League.
The case against him and six others has been filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (sections 405,420 and 120(b)). His advocates have described the filing of the criminal case against Modi as motivated and false.
Meanwhile, a senior official of new IPL management told rediff.com that Modi had directly or indirectly seen to it that one of his relatives or close associates were involved in contracts particularly in the case of Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab.
