CSA to persuade BCCI to use UDRS in Test series

October 25, 2010 11:18 IST

South Africa are in favour of the Umpire Decision Review System and CSA chief executive Gerald Majola said they are trying to convince India to use it in the home Test series starting on December 16.

India are not in favour of the UDRS and it was not used in their home two-match Test series against South Africa early this year.

The UDRS was not used in India's recently concluded Test series against Australia who had no problem in using the technology.

The BCCI has also ruled out using it in the forthcoming Test series against New Zealand starting in Ahmedabad on November 4. Majola said the CSA is having discussions with the BCCI over whether the system could be used during the three-match Test-series.

"We have to persuade India because at the moment they don't want it," Majola told ESPNcricinfo. According to ICC regulations, the host team can take a decision on the use of UDRS after consultation the visiting country and Majola said they want to implement the technology as "it's the most fair way for decisions to be made."

South African skipper Graeme Smith considers UDRS as beneficial to the game and wants ICC to implement it consistently.

"Technology is obviously an important way forward in cricket. It will be beneficial to the game and the players are behind. I think if the Umpire Decision Review System is going to be successful it needs to be implemented properly by the ICC and not on a 50/50 basis like we have seen so far," Smith said.

"It must be used all of the time and not for selective series' like we see now." The UDRS has evoked mixed reaction from across the globe. India and Sri Lanka were the first teams to use UDRS in a three-Test series in July-August 2008, but since that tour the Indian board had opposed the use of the system.

While former India captain Rahul Dravid approves the system, iconic batsman Sachin Tendulkar feels the use of technology must be foolproof before a call is taken on its implementation in matches.

South Africa, on the other hand, have used the UDRS three times in their last four Test series against Australia in the 2008-09 season, against England at home last season and against West Indies in June.
