Former New Zealand cricket captain Daniel Vettori might need to go in for surgery to fix his injured right knee.

Vettori, captain of Twenty20 franchise the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League, has flown home from India to have his injured knee assessed by a specialist.

He had an MRI scan on the knee in India ten days ago and it is understood he will probably require cleanup surgery.

Vettori, who could not be contacted, would see New Zealand Cricket's medical consultant Rob Campbell, Stuff.co.nz reports.

Bangalore's stand-in captain Virat Kohli said the team would wait for news on Vettori's fitness.

"Hopefully he (Vettori) will try to get back and be fit for upcoming games. We will have to wait and watch what happens. It is a very big loss for us," said Kohli.
