England pacer James Anderson believes they were completely out bowled by South Africa in their 2-0 Test series loss, which also ended their reign as the world's number one Test team.

Anderson admitted that England's despondent year as the No.1 ranked Test side was as a result of the bowling unit 'believing their own hype'.

"One thing that can detract from your performance when you get to No. 1 is you can start believing your own hype and own press. When people say you are a great bowling attack you can start believing that and this has been a huge wake-up call against South Africa," The Daily Express quoted Anderson, as saying.

"Maybe we have got a long way to go. We have been truly out-bowled and it shows we have a lot of work to do," he added.

Anderson said that although England have a substantial task to get the crown back, starting with the series against India this winter, he is backing them to do it.

"We were better when we were chasing the No.1 spot but we know how to do that. The starting point for that is in India. It is a tough place to start but it is also an exciting challenge," Anderson said.
