A top radio presenter apologised live on air after an unsavoury remark about injured Proteas wicketkeeper Mark Boucher.

Boucher was forced to call a halt to his career just ahead of his 1,000th wicket after suffering a serious eye injury in the UK.

Jacaranda FM presenter Martin Bester unlocked an outcry after he said on air that Boucher could now become the captain of the blind South African cricket side.

Amid protests in newspaper columns about the remarks, the president of Blind South Africa, Cathy Donaldson, said the remarks were insensitive, especially since the exact extent of Boucher's injury was not known at that stage.

"I feel terrible about what I said," Bester told his listeners. "I interpreted the news report (on Boucher's injuries) incorrectly and thought he was unharmed. I did not realise that his injury was so serious."

Boucher has meanwhile returned home and is receiving treatment from the best doctors in the country to avoid him losing his sight in his left eye completely.
