A nine-run defeat to Deccan Chargers dashed their hopes of qualifying for the IPL play-offs and Royal Challenger Bangalore's skipper Virat Kohli said his batsmen should have been clear in their mind and needed to play better shots in the crucial encounter.

After restricting the Chargers to 132-7, Bangalore fell shot by nine runs in the end and Kohli admitted it was his own wicket at a crucial stage that derailed their run chase.

"We could have played better shots, we did not play the right shots on that wicket. We needed to get in first and cash in at the end. My wicket probably changed the game. We needed 30 off 24 at that stage," Kohli said after the defeat.

"We just need to learn from our mistakes and come back stronger next year. The wicket was not that bad to bat on, it was a bit of two-paced but you needed to have clarity in the mind about what sort of shots to play," he added.

Virat KohliKohli, however, said his team played good cricket through out the tournament.

"We played great cricket in the tournament, we lost a few matches and it affected our run-rate but overall we played good cricket," he said.

Winning captain Kumar Sangakkara thanked his team for ending the season with a win at home.

"It was great to win at home. It was the last match of the season and we are glad we won. Shikhar Dhawan, Dale Steyn, Amit Mishra, Parthiv Patel -- all the young players did well for the team," he said.

South African speedster Dale Steyn, who returned figures of 4-0-3-0, was adjudged the Man of the Match.

"I think we've lost games that have been so crucial. But we won tonight and I am happy about that. A last over finish, I'm very happy we pulled it off and ended on a high at our home ground," Steyn said.

"Gayle and Dilshan are good players and if you are scared and worried to bowl to them, you would probably he hit out of the park but I was up for the challenge. It worked for me tonight," he added.
