Ishant Sharma showed some signs of returning to form with a five-wicket haul as Delhi gained the upper hand against Haryana at stumps on the second day of the Ranji Trophy group A encounter.

Ishant bowled with a lot of fire as he grabbed five for 29 in 17 overs as Haryana were bowled out for 138 in reply to Delhi's first innings score of 201.

Delhi scored 35 in the second innings as their lead swelled to 98 with Gautam Gambhir batting on 27.

Gambhir, however, looked scratchy but did hit a few boundaries in between.

Ishant dominated the proceedings during the Haryana innings as he hit the deck regularly causing problems for Haryana batsmen.

Rajat Bhatia, bowling his cutters, complemented him well with a four for 32 in 16 overs. Wicketkeeper Punit Bisht had a busy time behind the stumps having taken five catches.

Ishant bowled a good first spell, getting the outside edge of opener Nitin Saini (6) and one down batsman Sunny Singh. Then Bhatia joined picture removing left handed opener Abhimanyu Khod (15).

Abhi Barot (34) and Rahul Dalal (13) added 33 runs before Bhatia removed Dalal as he was adjudged leg before. Barot was out when Gambhir took a sharp catch at point while Jayant Yadav (0) was removed by Parvinder Awana.

At 82 for six, Joginder Sharma and Sachin Rana added 46 runs for the seventh wicket.

Joginder hit 35 off 38 balls with five boundaries before he edged an away going delivery to give Bhatia his fourth wicket.

Ishant then polished off the tail removing Rana and then last man Badhwar to ensure at least three points for Delhi.

Brief Scores:

Delhi 201 in 87.5 overs (Rajat Bhatia 39, Sanjay Badhwar 4/56)

Haryana 138 in 55 overs (Joginder Sharma 35, Ishant Sharma 5/29, Rajat Bhatia 4/32).

Shrivastava's 187 puts Vidarbha in command against Karnataka

Nagpur: Skipper Shalabh Shrivastava led from the front with an unbeaten 187 as Vidarbha reached 457 for six in their first innings against Karnataka at stumps on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Group A match.

Shrivastava blasted 21 boundaries in his unfinished 475-ball innings. He added 54 runs for the fifth wicket with Ranjit Paradkar and forged an unbeaten 88-run stand with SS Ruikar (48) for the seventh wicket.

Resuming Vidarbha's innings at 244 for two, Shrivastava and Thursday’s centurion Faiz Fazal could add just 22 more to their partnership as the opener was dismissed by H S Sharath in the 97th over.

Fazal added just eight runs to his overnight score of 139. He had 22 fours in his 283-ball innings.

Number 5 batsman RR Parida too could not stay longer as his innings was cut short after KP Appanna and CM Gautam combined to run him out in the 108th over as Vidarbha slipped to 289-4.

Shrivastava and Paradkar then took Vidarbha across the 300 mark before the latter was also run out by AA Kazi. SB Wagh was next to go when he was caught by MK Pandey off HS Sharath in the 144th over.

Shrivastava and Ruikar then ensured there were no more hiccups as they took Vidarbha across the 450-mark.

Brief score:

Vidarbha 1st innings: 457 for six in 179 overs (S Shrivastava 187 not out; H S Sharath 2/84).

Bengal get innings lead despite Pujara ton

Kolkata: Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara started his preparations for the South Africa Test series in right earnest with a century but failed to take Saurashtra past Bengal's first innings score of 303 as the hosts gained a crucial 78-run first innings lead in a Ranji Trophy league encounter at Eden Gardens.

Pujara scored a well-made 102 but Saurashtra were all-out for 225 with India discard Ashoke Dinda claiming four for 65. Skipper Laxmi Ratan Shukla showed his all-round abilities chipping in with a couple of wickets for 36 runs.

Seamer Sourav Sarkar (2/34), Shib Shankar Paul (1/43) and Sourashish Lahiri (1/24) were the other successful bowlers.

At stumps, Bengal were five for no loss in their second innings with Lahiri coming out to open with Arindam Das as regular opener Rohan Banerjee didn't field for a considerable amount of time due to stomach pain.

The overall lead is of 83 runs.

Coming in to bat at No 3, Pujara showed why he is cut above rest as he smashed 15 fours and a six off a full-toss bowled by leg break bowler Anustup Majumdar.

Saurashtra lost half of the side for 119 but till Pujara was there, the visitors harboured hopes of a first innings lead. He added 56 runs with Chirag Jani for the sixth wicket.

With the first ball of the 74th over, Dinda dismissed Pujara, as the batsman was played on to a delivery that had a bit of extra pace.

Once Pujara was gone at the score of 207, the next three wickets fell for an addition of only 18 runs.

It was an action packed day at the Eden Gardens as Saurashtra openers Bhushan Chauhan (19) and Sagar Jogiyani (21) saw the first hour of play without much hassles adding 44 runs.

Then it was Dinda and Paul, who provided breakthroughs in successive overs with both the batsmen edging to wicketkeeper Wridhiman Saha behind the stumps.

Sheldon Jackson (7) and skipper Jaydev Shah (11) were out edging to Arindam Das at first slip off Sarkar and Shukla respectively.

The top half of the Saurashtra batting was gone when Aarpit Vasavada edged one to Saha off Shukla's bowling.

Playing on Rajkot featherbeds, the Saurashtra players barring Pujara found it difficult to cope with seam movement.

However, with two days to go and Bengal having a fragile batting line-up in absence of Manoj Tiwary, Saurashtra could still fancy an outright win if they can keep Bengal's lead within 250 as they have Pujara in their ranks.

Brief Scores:

Bengal 303 and 5 for 0 in 1 over (Saurasish Lahiri 4 batting, Arindam Das 1 batting; Sandip Maniar 1/5).

Saurashtra: 225 all out in 79.3 overs (Cheteshwar Pujara 102; Ashok Dinda 4/65, Sourav Sarkar 2/34).

Punjab bundle out Gujarat for 127

Mohali: Punjab produced an inspired bowling display to bowl out Gujarat for a paltry 127 and take the vital innings lead on the second day of a Ranji Trophy Group A match.

Pace trio of Sandeep Sharma (4/59), Siddarth Kaul (2/31) and Manpreet Gony (2/26) effectively used the pace and bounce of the Mohali wicket to take a crucial 45-run first innings lead.

Starting at the overnight score of 61 for six, it was always expected to be a difficult task for Gujarat to overwhelm Punjab 172-run first innings score as the visitors had already lost their entire top-order.

Even though Gujarat's tail showed some resistance, unlike their top-order, the asking was too tall.

Gujarat's batsmen's struggle can be gauged from the fact that no. 10 batsman Bhavesh Baria (43) top-scored for the visitors.

At stumps, Punjab were 127 for the loss of two wickets in their second essay, thus taking an overall lead of 172 runs.

Openers Jiwanjot Singh (51) and Ravi Inder Singh (47) gave a solid start to Punjab's second innings with a century stand.

Taruwar Kohli (14 not out) and Mandeep Singh (8 not out) were at the crease at the close of play.

Left-arm spinner Akshar Patel picked up both the Punjab wickets to fall today.

Brief Scores:

Punjab: 172 & 127 for two in 59 overs (Jiwanjot Singh 51, Ravi Inder Singh 47; Akshar Patel 2/22).

Gujarat: 127 all out in 43.3 overs (Bhavesh Baria 43; Sandeep Sharma 4/59).

Railways bounce back against Rajasthan

Overnight 223 for seven, Railways rode on wicketkeeper Mahesh Rawat's 88-ball 52 and Anureet Singh's 20 to go past the 250 mark before the innings folded in 99.1 overs.

Rajasthan's response was off to a disastrous start and they lost their first wicket -- opener Siddharth Saraf (2) -- with merely two runs on the scoreboard.

Vineet Saxena, unbeaten at 73 after facing 203 balls, was the lone batsman putting up some resistance against the Railways. At stumps, he had Deepak Chahar (1) for company.

Anureet was the wrecker-in-chief for the visiting side, grabbing three for 48 in 26 overs, 11 of which were maidens.

Saxena got little support at the other end with 19 by wicketkeeper Dishant Yagnik being the next best score after his.

Madhya Pradesh added three runs to their overnight total before being bundled out for 239. Suraj Yadav could not get a five-wicket haul as Irfan Khan had last-man Amarjeet Singh caught off his own bowling in the second over of the day.

When the hosts batted, Services opener Pratik Desai (58) held one end after the other opener and skipper Soumik Chatterjee (8) and Nakuk Verma (4) fell cheaply.
