Pacer Ishant Sharma claimed a career-best six-wicket haul before India scored 100 for 2 by close of play on the first day of the second Test against New Zealand, in Wellington, on Friday.

Ishant was the pick of the tourists' bowlers, who were given first use of a green, bouncy Basin Reserve wicket after captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won his seventh successive toss.

The tall right-armer took 6 for 51 as the hosts were shot out for 192 after tea.

Mohammed Shami provided admirable support and was rewarded with four wickets for 70 runs.

Shikhar Dhawan was unbeaten on 71 and Ishant, sent in as night-watchman after Chesteshwar Pujara was out for 19, was not out on three at the close.

Statistical highlights of the first day's play:

- Ishant Sharma (6/51) recorded his career-best performance in Test, his second instance of five wickets in an innings vs New Zealand and his fifth overall.

- Ishant's previous best figures in a Test innings was six for 55 against West Indies at Bridgetown in June 2011. His performance is the best by an Indian pacer in a Test innings in New Zealand, surpassing his own figures of six for 134 at Auckland in the first Test of the ongoing series.

- Ishant became the first Indian fast bowler to claim six wickets in a Test innings twice in New Zealand. No other Indian pacer has accomplished the feat even once.

- With his tally of 15 wickets (average 14.20) in three innings, Ishant now holds a record by an Indian medium pacer in a Test series against New Zealand, outstripping the 13 wickets each captured by three bowlers -- Ramakant Desai in 1964-65; Javagal Srinath in 1999-2000 and Zaheer Khan in 2008-09.

- Ishant became only the second Indian pace bowler to claim five wickets or more in an innings twice in New Zealand in Tests. Zaheer Khan holds an Indian record for registering three five-wicket hauls in Tests in New Zealand -- two at Wellington and one at Hamilton.

His previous best figures against New Zealand was three for 37 in the second innings at Auckland in the first Test of the ongoing series.
