While Mitchell Johnson emerged the most outstanding Australian cricketer of the past season and walked away with the Allan Border Medal, named after one of Australia's greatest captains and cricketers, Michael Clarke, who led Australia to a 5-0 sweep over England in the Ashes, was Australia’s Test Player of the Year.

But more than them, it was the wives and girlfriends who stole the limelight as Australia honoured its cricketers at Monday night's annual awards, held for the first time in Sydney.

Take a look:

Young Australia spinner Ashton Agar, who shot to fame with his 98-run innings on debut while batting at No. 11 against England in the Ashes in July 2013, and girlfriend Madeline Hay arrive at the 2014 Allan Border Medal at Doltone House in Sydney, Australia.

Clarke, who won the Allan Border medal the past two years, was denied a hat-trick of the award by Johnson, who garnered 168 votes, 12 more than him.

The left-arm paceman, who was named International Cricket Council's International Player of the Year in 2009, took 37 wickets as Australia swept to a 5-0 Ashes whitewash, but he was stunned when his name was read out.

Wife Jessica, with a tear in her eye, hugged him as the 200-strong crowd at Doltone House cheered.
